Unity Housing is proud to be part of SALA Festival 2022. Our exhibition features mixed medium artworks by established, emerging and
hobbyist Unity Housing tenant and staff artists.

Allan Gaekwad

Allan is a Fellow of the Royal South Australian Society of Arts on North Terrace. He loves creating portraits and capturing the essence of the subject in different mediums.
Allan regularly exhibits at the RSASA gallery and at Adelaide Art Society in North Adelaide. Allan is also a published author. His book An Appreciation of Dorrit Black Paintings offers a glimpse into the extensive work of the Adelaide painter.

Annette Chand - Iris Moon Photography

Annette’s photography has been well received. She is a winning participant in the Community Housing Art Awards South Australia awards (CHARTS). Collaborative Art Project

The Art Collective members Greg, Jennie, Marianne, Matt, Lesley and Lew collaborated to create this assemblage. The Art Collective is open to all Unity Housing tenants. The group meet on the first Thursday of each month.

Coni Coyne Jones

Coni is a moandik kanyal (woman) living on her ancestors’ mratt (country) in Naracoorte. Constance’s art is contemporary Aboriginal art and is based on her observations of the mratt surrounding landscape. She is sharing her view of the beauty around her.

DesmaKas

Desma completed a Bachelor of Visual Art and Design from the Adelaide College of the Arts. She has held solo shows and has been in several group exhibitions around Adelaide. Desma is a drawer and painter and her ideas come from the world around and inside of her. Desma’s home and garden are often her inspiration.

Jody Smart

Jody is mostly a pencil/coloured pencil artist whom, due to declining health and increasing disability, is losing fine motor skills meaning a decline in what was an emerging artist ability. Jody’s passion is pieces that reflect emotions and/or social issues generally. Her work is often blunt but other times she just enjoys drawing beauty, and what fills her with inspiration in that moment.

DESCRIPTION: The frangipani was my mother’s favourite flower. I lost her suddenly in 2007 when my daughter was only four-months-old and so I drew this to represent the fragrant, delicate side of the memories I have of my mother.

DESCRIPTION: This is Gina, this is my Mum, this is my children’s Granny. She passed away suddenly, aged 50, and is the last of my family. This drawing was to honour her and was also cathartic for me to put her soul onto paper in my own way. Capturing the inner sparkle in her eyes to be forever encapsulated for anyone to see.

    Some of the works this year are amazing and all are beautiful and wonderful. I loved the collective piece from the art group and was encouraged by all the aboriginal artworks. We’ve done a pretty good job everyone.
